IP Looking for a KVM Solution

    Looking for an 8-port KVM with single IP user, VGA ports; 1920x1080 monitor console.

    Two of the computers are located 200 feet away from where we want to locate the switch and the user console.

    One of these Windows PCs must also have access with it's own display and keyboard next to it. For this - we are thinking of some kind of switcher. The only thing I've found is the ATEN CS231 2-port Computer Sharing KVM Switch.

    Your best bet (among 8-port KVM over IP switches) is Dominion LX 108, supporting 1920x1080 (1080p) both locally and remotely (over IP), and natively supporting VGA at the console.

    The CAT-5 dongles that work with Dominion LX only support 150 feet. Since your distance is longer, you will need to use a KVM extender, such as CE100 or UX-PLUS.

    Since you're going to be using a KVM extender, for this computer you should use a KVM extender that supports local access (such as CE700A, providing you the ability to have a local console by the computer.

    That CE700A doesn't do 1920x1080 resolution over 150ft. It only supports lower resolutions at that distance.

    Ooops.... sorry, you are correct!
    CE770 supports 1080p at 300 feet, and also supports a local console.

    WOW, thought you were going to respond with no-such-thing!

    1920 x 1200 300ft will do it. I wonder if it will accept 1920 x 1080? But that shouldn't be a real issue. I failed to mention I need a console too. So to be clear:
    • 8-port Switch VGA/USB
    • 1920 x 1080 console or 1920 x 1200 console
    • 1 local and 1 remote IP user

    Devices supporting 1920x1200 video resolution do also support (the lower) 1920x1080 resolution.

    Dominion LX 108 is the KVM over IP switch supporting 1 local user and 1 remote IP user, to which you connect a keyboard/mouse and VGA monitor (console) to access your computers (via the switch). You could, of course, use a rack-mount LCD console such as the T1700-LED KVM Console Drawer instead of a standard console, in which case you may also want to check out Sylphit-HD VU-117.

    The Dominion LX 108 would require more expensive cables. 2 of 5 computers will have the KVM extenders you helped me find, which are VGA/USB outs.
    So I need an 8-port VGA/USB Switch with 1 IP user. I'm looking. I've found this:

    You need a cable for each computer, including those which will be connected via the KVM extender.

    Dominion LX 108 PLUS 5 cables will run you $899.00. The switch you found PLUS 5 cables will run you $1,472.00, and the switch is NOT made by a top-tier brand.

    I'm wondering if I need to worry about IP connectivity. Once installed on site we will be using Cisco VPN for remote access.

    Back to drawing board.

    www.Aten--kvm.com is saying this won't work now.
    They are saying that CE770 is only a console sender. Here is a diagram of what I'm trying to do (attached file). If I use the CE770, then I wouldn't be able to hook up the other end to the KVM 8-port switcher. I would have to use a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor. We'll see Aten is working on it.

    Rose Electronics make hardware for my solution but I'm sure the quote will be over $5000.

    Your diagram depicts the extension using CE770 correctly. When you connect the CE770 Receiver unit to a port on the Dominion LX switch, you WILL be able to access the remote PC via the switch, as well as via its local console (albeit - one at a time).

    Ok, but don't understand why they are saying no and there is nothing in the manual to suggest it will do this. It only sends another console, basically in reverse. So, Remote PC 1 and 2 would need to be in Server room with KVM Switch.

    But here is my solution: ou guys failed to mention this sucker:
    Raritan CAT5 Reach DVI

    Raritan recommends the DKX3-108

    Wondering if I can still use the Dominion LX 108
    and I'll probably get the T1700-LED

    This is a KVM console extender (just as the CE770 is), only designed to do DVI video. You will need to add a DVI-to-VGA video converter on the Transmitter end, and a DVI-VGA adapter on the Receiver end for this to work with VGA video.

    Dominion KX III 108 is the enterprise-level KVM over IP switch which offers enterprise features that you probably don't need (redundant Ethernet; redundant power, etc.). I does not support VGA at the local console (only DVI-D), and it is more expensive.

    Confirmed the Dominion LX 108 will work. Those damn CIMs are over $100 each. And the CAT5 Reach is $800

    Yes. For all intents and purposes, Dominion LX 108 is a scaled-down version of Dominion KX III, and it natively supports VGA video.

    You don't have to use CIMs. CIMs are designed (among other things) to support long distances (up to 150 feet) between the server and the switch, which you probably don't need. You can use Integrated UTP Cables instead (see list of all compatible cables and CIMs at the bottom of the Dominion LX 108 page). They are available in short lengths and are significantly less expensive.
