Switch Two independent monitors

I'm looking to set up 4 computers to be controlled by a KVM switch.

I want my console to consist of 1x keyboard, 1x mouse, 1x monitor, with switching focus (and control) via the KVM switch.

I want to have a 2nd monitor as well, and want to be independently able to control the video displayed on it (coming from either one of the 4 computers).

Example: While controlling computer #1 with k/b, mouse and 1st monitor, I want the 2nd monitor to display video from either computer #2, or #3, or #4 at will.

    Can you recommend a solution?

    Hello Marc,

Thank you for reaching out and sorry for the belated response - we wanted to do some further research before getting back with you.

In principle, there are three ways to accomplish your setup:

    1) KVM over IP. Utilizing an Ethernet network you could connect 4x Transmitter units to your 4 computers and 2x Receiver units at your consoles (one consisting of a monitor, k/b and mouse; the other consisting of only a monitor). Some brands (e.g. Adder; kvm-tec) require additional hardware/software to facilitate the switching. If you use Gefen you may be able to use a video-only Receiver unit for the 2nd monitor.

    2) "Old fashion" KVM and video switching. A 2-port video splitter could get connected to each computer's video output. One video-split will get connected to a 4-port KVM switch along with a USB connection, serving the console consisting of a monitor, k/b and mouse. 2nd video-split will get connected to a 4-port video switch, serving the 2nd monitor.

    3) A 2-user KVM switch (not over IP). Perhaps the cleanest way of them all, all four computers get connected to the KVM switch. Two user connection are being made to the switch's console ports (one consisting of a monitor, k/b and mouse; the other consisting of only a monitor and k/b which will be used to facilitate the video switching).

Please let us know what type video your computers and monitors support, as well as required video resolution and we could recommend specific models.
