    Hello,

Would really appreciate a recommendation on a KVM switch. Getting lost in all of the options..

I have a home office where I switch between a Windows machine and an Ubuntu machine and have two monitors. One old and one pretty new. The newer one is 4k and has a DisplayPort and an HDMI port. The older one HDMI and VGA and is a 720p. Eventually would like to also upgrade the old monitor.

Been thinking that I would rather have a DisplayPort with EDID but reading that I have DisplayPort I don't need EDID? Would have to get an adapter for the older monitor. Also would like to run audio through it.

I currently have a IOGEAR which I plan on returning. It is only a single monitor, the mouse does not work very on Windows, and the audio is terrible! My second monitor doesn't work when plugged directly into the Ubuntu computer, and thinking that it may because of the one monitor on the KVM.

Also really like the idea of copy and paste between sources!!!

Thank you for you help and recommendations.

    Hello Zach,

Thank you for reaching out on our HelpCenter.

Before we can point you in the right direction, we need some additional information about your setup. Please advise:
    1) How many video ports does your Windows machine have?
    2) What type of video ports does your Windows machine have?
    3) How many video ports does your Ubuntu machine have?
    4) What type of video ports does your Ubuntu machine have?

    Please advise.

    Hello,

Thank you for the response. My Ubuntu machine has 4 Mini-DisplayPort outputs and I have 4 adapters to normal DisplayPort. Windows machine has a HDMI port and a DisplayPort port.

    Zach,

SM-UHX-2D could be a good choice for you, since - unlike most dual-video KVM switches on the market - is supports computers with 1x DisplayPort and 1x HDMI video connectors, while sending the video to 2x HDMI monitors. This setup will accommodate your two monitors (both having HDMI) and your Windows machine (having 1x DisplayPort and 1x HDMI video connectors). For your Ubuntu machine you will need 1x Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

This feature is not supported by SM-UHX-2D. In fact, there are very few KVM switches out there that support transferring data from one computer to the other via the switch.

    Hope this helps!
