Switch KVM over IP setup question

    Hi All,
Looking for some help on a new system I am trying to get setup. I am trying to setup 4 desktops on a KVM switch that is connected over CAT5 to a user station. The user station will have either a VGA/HDMI monitor, keyboard and mouse but would also like the ability to connect additional peripherals (barcode scanners, etc) at the user station. Can anyone help me out with an equipment lineup?

    Thanks
    Tim

    Tim,

From what you're describing, it sounds like you're looking for a KVM switch setup in which the user console is away from the computers, by means of a long CATx cable. This setup, as we understand it, does not require KVM over IP.

However, we have some clarifying questions:
    1) What is the distance between the four computers and the user console (use station)?
    2) What type video do the computers have (VGA; HDMI; DVI etc.)?

The distance between the computers and the user station would not be over 20-30ft and a cat5 run would be great. Video for the computers would be VGA for the time being. Also noticed some switches have "remotes" with numbers/buttons assigned to workstations that a user can easily select a unit to activate, which would be helpful as well. This setup is for a check out counter that has multiple tenants that could be occupying the counter. Simple is best for user ease of use which is why the remote selector idea sounded interesting. Appreciate any help!

    Thanks

All these 4-port VGA/USB KVMP switches will take care of the switching task for you and will support sharing additional peripherals.

A good choice that also supports an optional remote keypad (for switching) is the AdderView 4 PRO VGA. The optional 4 Way Remote Control Keypad can connect to the switch using a long CAT-5 cable (no extension needed).

Use a VGA/USB KVM extender to extend the console to the user-station location.

To accomplish this you will need to deploy a separate USB extender that will connect the the USB Hub ports of the KVM switch. The USB extender should have a hub on the user end to support the connection of multiple USB devices.
Have a closer look at these Data Extenders, C-USB LAN, UEH4002, and USB2Pro which will all accomplish the USB peripheral extension you're looking for.
