Multi-screen 4 laptop multi-monitor KVM

    I'm looking for a 4 laptop multi-monitor KVM. The laptops and available ports are:

    HP Elitebook 850 G6
    * 2x USB 3.1 Gen 1 (one of which is a charging port)
    * 1x Thunderbolt (USB Type-C connector)
    * 1x RJ-45 (Ethernet)
    * 1x Headphone/microphone combo jack
    * 1x HDMI 1.4b
    * 1x Docking connector
    * 1x AC power port

    * 2x Thunderbolt 4 with Power Delivery and DisplayPort (USB Type-C)
    * 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (one with PowerShare)
    * 1x HDMI 2.0
    * 1x RJ-45 (Ethernet)

    * 1x microSD-card slot
    * 1x Smart card reader slot
    * 1x Wedge-shaped lock slot

    The monitor that I’d like to use is:
    Dell UltraSharp 43 4K USB-C Hub Monitor (U4323QE)
    * 1x DisplayPort 1.4 (with DSC)
    * 2x HDMI 2.1
    * 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 upstream (with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and 90W Power Delivery)
    * 3x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 downstream (15W)
    * 4x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 downstream (one with BC 1.2 charging)
    * 1x RJ45 (Ethernet)
    * 1x Audio line-out

    My questions are:
    • KVM solutions
    o Quad monitor KVM – The Dell U4323QE monitor is a single screen but allows quad view (four monitor equivalent) via picture-by-picture (PBP) technology and dedicated individual ports. Would a four laptop and four monitor KVM solution be compatible with the laptops’ and monitor’s ports? Also, a broader question that I have is: can all laptops be used in a quad monitor solution with creative adapters/cabling, or are there limitations with the laptops themselves that prevent quad view?
    o Dual monitor KVM – The other alternative that I’m considering is connecting two of the four quadrants of the Dell U4323QE to a dual monitor KVM (with four laptops) and connecting the other two quadrants directly to the MacBook Pro that’s listed above. Are there enough of the right ports (or adapter compatible ports) that would allow connecting both the KVM and MacBook? In this solution, I’m assuming that I would need to use two keyboards, mice, webcams, etc.

    • Monitors
    o I’m completely open to your monitor recommendations. Are there any monitors that you recommend that are most compatible with KVM solutions?

    • Peripherals
    o Can one webcam be shared by the four laptops on the KVM?
    o Can they share the same keyboard, mouse, and possibly speakers?

    • General
    o At times, I may only have three laptops connected to the four laptop KVM. Is that OK? Will it just render a black screen on the channel for the missing laptop?

    Hello Dan,

    We have some questions that need to be clarified before we can address the issues you brought up:
    USB 3.1 Gen 1 is the USB version. What we need to know is what type of USB connectors you have. (The same goes for USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 4 you mentioned for the other laptops).
    Please provide the type of USB connectors for each laptop.

    Another question:
    You mentioned your monitor can take in 4x video feeds (and show each feed on one quadrant of the screen). But you listed on 3x video connection.
    Which is the 4th connector being used by the monitor for a 4th video feed?

    Please advise.

    The fourth video input is the USB-C upstream connector. This port supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode, which allows it to receive a video signal from a compatible device using a USB-C cable.

    The four available video inputs are:

    2x HDMI

    No.
    We are not aware of any top-brand multi-screen KVM switch that is able to make a connection to a monitor's USB-C port.
    By the same token, we are not aware of any top-brand video adapter that takes DisplayPort or HDMI video and sends it to a USB-C connector to plug into a monitor.

    Yes, no limitations.

    Not sure what you mean by connecting the other two quadrants directly to the MacBook Pro - please advise.

    We don't sell monitors. Being that we will recommend an HDMI KVM switch (see below), we recommend you go with monitor(s) that support HDMI connections.

    As for the recommended KVM switch...

    a) Each laptop must have multiple video ports (to connect to the KVM switch) that match the number of screens (video feeds, or video quadrants) you're looking to set yourself up with.
    But all your laptops have only 1x HDMI port.
    You can "create" more HDMI ports by the use of USB Video Adapters that connect to a USB port on your laptop. If you're going with a dual-monitor solution you'll need to "create" just one additional HDMI port. If you're going with a quad-monitor solution you'll need to "create" three additional HDMI ports.
    We recommend you use one (or two) of your USB-C ports for this purpose. Note: Wherever possible, keep at least 1x USB Type-A port available for the keyboard/mouse connection from the laptop to the KVM switch.
    Available 1-port USB-C to HDMI video adapters.
    Available 2-port USB-C to HDMI video adapters.
    We recommend that when "creating" 3x HDMI ports you deploy one of each. Or use a 3-port USB-C to HDMI video adapter.

    b) We recommend going with an HDMI multi-screen KVM switch:
    - Available dual-monitor KVM switches (4-ports [to connect 4x laptops], with USB peripheral sharing and 3.5mm speaker-sharing support)
    - Available quad-monitor KVM switches (4-ports [to connect 4x laptops], with USB peripheral sharing and 3.5mm speaker-sharing support)
    Use KVMGFilter to optionally further refine your search based on required (max) video resolution, USB version (for sharing USB peripherals) and additional features you may require.

    The Dell U4323QE monitor quad view can also be split using its PBP mode into two separate dual-monitor systems (i.e. two vertically stacked dual monitor layouts; two monitors on the left, and two monitors on the right). My goal is to run my MacBook Pro directly on the two left quadrants while simultaneously running my four other laptops through a dual-monitor KVM on the two right quadrants.

    Left Side: Have my MacBook Pro connected directly to two of the monitor's inputs (e.g., USB-C and HDMI-1) to create a single, vertically stacked dual-monitor workspace on the two left quadrants.

    Right Side: Simultaneously, have a 4-port, dual-monitor KVM connected to the two remaining monitor inputs (e.g., DisplayPort and HDMI-2) to provide a shared, vertically stacked view for my other laptops on the two right quadrants.

    From the KVM and connection-type perspective, would this solution work? Would you recommend any changes to the connector usage choices for the available connections on the monitor?

    I have identified the LG 43UN700-B as a more KVM-friendly monitor, instead of the originally mentioned Dell U4323QE that had connector limitations. With the ports listed below, would the LG 43UN700-B be capable of working with a 4-laptop and 4-monitor KVM?

    Here is a complete list of the LG 43UN700-B monitor's I/O ports for your reference:

    Video Inputs:
    HDMI 2.0: 4 ports
    DisplayPort 1.4: 1 port
    USB-C: 1 port (supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode video input)

    Other Connectivity:
    USB 3.0 Downstream: 2 ports (Type-A, for peripherals)
    USB-C Upstream: The same USB-C video input port also serves as the upstream connection for the USB hub and provides 60W of Power Delivery.
    Headphone Out: 1 port

    Given this port layout, which 4-laptop and 4-monitor KVM switch would you recommend as the best match to drive all four quadrants of this monitor simultaneously?
