Multi-screen DVI out issue

    Heya!

I have an older video card with 3 outputs: DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI, and am currently running 3 monitors from those (with no use of adapters).

I've started a new job and have been supplied with:
    • an HP laptop
    • with an HP G6 Dock (aka thunderbolt?) which has 2 DisplayPort outputs and 1 HDMI.
    • (2x) Asus BE24EQK monitors, each with: 1 HDMI, 1 DisplayPort, 1 D-Sub inputs

I would like to use my current monitor setup and just install a KVM with my personal PC and my work laptop.

I CAN swap one (or two) of my personal monitors for the work monitors if necessary or if it makes connections easier.

From my research it seems my biggest problem is the DVI out on my PC working with a KVM.

I'm trying to keep expenses at a minimum. Eventually, I'll have to upgrade my PC (windows 11 does not support my cp, so ill have a major overhaul at some point in the future, but that's a can I'll keep kicking till I can't any more) and when I do, if I get a new video card, this will not be a problem.

Until then, though, any advice as to how to make this work regarding adapters and/or KVMs would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

PS - perhaps not necessary, but I've uploaded a visual of what I'm seeing in my head.

    Hello insanityslave ,

Thank you for reaching out on our HelpCenter.

    Very helpful, thanks!

Not necessarily, being that DVI video is compatible with HDMI video.
The main issue (albeit fairly easily solvable) appears to be the mix of video outputs you have (DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI), being that multi-screen KVM switched usually support only one type of video across the board.

But before we continue - We have some questions that need to be clarified before we can address the issues you brought up:
    1) What is the video resolution running on your PC with the older video card?
    2) What is the video resolution running on your HP laptop (through the docking station)?
    3) What is the maximum video resolution supported by each of your 5 monitors?

    Please advise.

    On my PC:
    Monitor 1 (my main/newest) runs at 2560 x 1440
    Monitors 2 and 3 (the smaller/older ones) both run at 1920 x 1080

I cannot fully access the laptop yet. my first day on the job is 3/2 (next month), at which point they'll give me login credentials etc. and then I can dig around.

But I was able to connect a work monitor to the dock and boot up the laptop, and the OSD on the monitor said it was running at 1920 x 1080 (which I'd expect from a 24" work screen).
I don't expect to use a resolution any higher, even if it goes higher.

All those numbers reflect the max supported resolution (verified through online documentation and/or windows settings).
    - so my main monitor is 2560x1440 and the other 4 are 1920x1080

I hope this answers your questions well enough.

    Thanks!

    PS
fwiw, my initial thought was to use adapter cables, but most of the KVMs I was looking at (on amazon) were clear that they did not support that type of connection.
for example; I could use a
    - DVI>HDMI from PC to KVM
    - DisplayPort>HDMI from dock to KVM
    - use work monitor at 3rd monitor using the HDMI input

this would allow me to get a KVM with 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort.

but... if most KVMs don't support these types of cables, then I'm at a loss.

Also... having hooked up the work monitor, I would like to be able t0 swap out both my older monitors for the work ones. They are all about the same resolution and new ones are a smidge bigger, but the picture is quite a bit better with regards to brightness/contrast. I don't see a problem swapping one out with my current HDMI monitor, but the DVI one could present complications...

That said, it's a minor improvement, and if it complicates things too much, keeping the work monitors in boxes is easy.
    ty!

    It does not.
We need to know what video resolution is supported by both your computers - questions 1) and 2) - not only by the monitors.

    Please advise.
