A/V KVM with NTI DP8K-EDID-EMLTR Non-Recommendation

The NTI DP8K-EDID-EMLTR EDID emulator warns that it is Not Recommended for use in conjunction with KVM or video-only switches, and the reason given is that when the input channel is deselected, the emulator will be powered off. The host computer connected to that input channel via DP emulator will recognize the emulated monitor as disconnected.
    • Practically speaking, what is the harm to the outcome described above?
    • Does it mean that I will have to get EDID info with each monitor switch from the emulator adding to the time before an image appears?
    • Or is the emulator useless because the computer could just get EDID from the monitor?
    Any explanation appreciated.

    Hello PCW,

Thank you for reaching out on our HelpCenter.

The main purpose of the DP8K-EDID-EMLTR emulator is to provide monitor EDID when it is not available otherwise when using equipment that does not pass EDID (like some video splitters or extenders).

While there is no harm to any of the devices if a DP8K-EDID-EMLTR unit is used with a KVM switch, there is a problem that results from such a configuration. When using a switch (video or KVM), the source that was active is no longer connected to monitor(s) after switching. When switching back to this source, the source detects that a monitor is now connected and begins the plug-n-play process.

While the source does need some time to read monitor EDID to send appropriate signal, and the monitor then needs some time to sync to that signal, there is not too much EXTRA time elapse for this process. It should essentially be the same as if you physically connected the monitor directly to the source.

However, this new connection (from switching) typically results in a repositioning of the open windows (and/or desktop icons). This is annoying to many people as they need to re-arrange the windows back to the way they were prior to changing ports on the switch.

We offer the DisplayPort Hotplug Maintainer that was designed to keep the source from detecting that a monitor is disconnected/reconnected when using a switch.

    Hope this helps!
